Return percentages are quoted to two decimal places, which implies a precision that means nothing at the scale of an actual session. Understanding what the figure is and what it is not is the difference between reading a specification and reading it correctly.
What the number describes
The proportion of total stake the mathematical model returns over an infinite sequence of rounds. It is a property of the model, calculated from the reel weightings and the paytable, verified by a testing laboratory. It is not a prediction, an average outcome or a target that the game works towards.
The complement is the more useful framing. A return of 96.51 per cent means a house edge of 3.49 per cent, and the edge is the figure that compounds against turnover. Multiply it by rounds played and stake per round and you have the expected cost of a session, which is a number the specification never presents directly.
Why the decimals are noise
The difference between 96.51 and 96.20 is thirty-one hundredths of a percentage point. Over a thousand rounds at a fixed stake that difference amounts to roughly three units of stake, which is far smaller than the variation any thousand-round sample will produce by chance.
